Programs

The Carr Center has provided services to individuals with disabilities and their families for over 50 years. A non-profit organization, the center depends upon the support of our community to maintain and grow quality programs to meet the needs of adults and children with disabilities, when these needs cannot be met in another way.

Speech Screenings

Speech and language pathologists screen children for delays, which may affect their ability to develop normally and make appropriate referrals for services.

Toddler Enrichment Program

This program offers specialized speech/language therapy and a language rich social program for children ages 18 months to 5 years. Consultation and referral to additional specialists is made on a case-by-case basis.

Speech/Language Program

Offers individualized speech/language therapy services to children.

Summer Enrichment Program

Offers an extended school year program to children with autism. School districts or parents make referrals. (Summer Only)

Special Riders Program

Provides individuals with severe physical disabilities the opportunity to ride horses. Volunteers and staff work in teams of three to facilitate a safe horseback riding experience for participants. (Spring and Fall Only)

Safety Town

Provides children ages 4 and 5 with a special opportunity to learn about traffic, fire and other safety issues. (Summer Only)

Service Coordination

Provides families of children enrolled in our youth programs with support and linkage to other services, which may provide assistance to families of children with special needs.

Parents of Children with Special Needs Support Group

Meets monthly at the center to provide parents with a forum for discussion of issues relating to parenting and servicing children with special needs. Special programs are held with speakers who address numerous issues which families face when parenting special needs children. 

Kids on the Block

A disability awareness program of life-sized puppets, operated by local teen volunteers visit area schools and organizations to share the stories of the puppets, all of whom have a disability.

Academic Scholarship Program

Offers an academic scholarship to one student with disabilities per year to assist them with college expenses.

Specific Assistance Program

Provides one-time financial assistance for the purchase of orthopedic or medical equipment or for other special needs not covered by another source.

Equipment Lending

Provides wheelchairs, walkers and other adaptive equipment at no cost, through a lending program.

Adult Day Services

Provides adult day care to individuals who require constant care during daytime hours. Individuals with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other physical or cognitive limitations receive a quality activity and social program weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Medical monitoring and support are provided by nurses and trained staff. Referrals to this program are made through a variety of sources including the Area Agency on Aging, physicians, social service staff and individual services.

Parkinson’s Support Group

Provides a facilitated environment for enriching the lives of individuals suffering from Parkinson’s. Spouses and other caregivers meet at the same time and are given special tools to help them handle the stress associated with the care giving role.

Parkinson’s Speech Group

A licensed speech/language pathologist works with individuals with Parkinson’s in a small group to help them identify and solve some of the speech/language concerns associated with Parkinson’s.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

Meets monthly at the center and provides support to families and others who are living with a loved one with Alzheimer’s.

PACE-People with Arthritis Can Exercise

A specially designed exercise program for individual with arthritis. Meets twice a week at the center for an exercise program led by a certified instructor.

Arthritis Support Group

Meets monthly at the center to provide education and support for people with arthritis and their families.
